Comic Song Competition 2007

An afternoon of highly entertaining performances were enjoyed by all who attended the comic song contest which was held at the Hill Inn. It was extremely well supported this year by both artists and audience alike. People had travelled from a variety of locations to attend the competition and put a lot of effort in to perform to a very high standard. The songs and monologues performed covered an amazing amount of subjects, ranging through, car parks( specifically Skipton car park ), carrot Fairies ( ensuring all vomit is uniformly supplied with carrots), pets, ghost chickens, town centre twitching, pinkin shears, football, rampant dog, donkeys, hells angel, girls, flowers, colds, a budgie, the silent treatment, a seasonal wish , abbreviations, turtles, a wittering women Our Sponsors - Masons Dog Oil, generously contributed an engraved silver platter for the overall winner and the prize money. 20 Entries were registered ( 75% of which was self penned work) . The competitors were all of an exceptionally high standard. The audience judged the event scoring on Performance, Content and Audience Reaction. The results were as follows: Overall and Original Work prizes were awarded to Andy Hill - for his performance of the "Skipton Car Park" . ( an example of how a ludicrous real life situation can be made into a major comedy, particularly if you have the outstanding talent of song writer and performer as was demonstrated by Andy) The second prize was awarded to Ron Davies for his performance of "Seasonal Request". ( Ron has an amazing gift in his delivery of comic monologue) With such a fantastic standard this year it did not come as a surprise, at all, to find that 3 entries scored the same mark placing them all as runners up and the Hill Inn kindly awarded them a special runners up prize. They were : Andy Ives - with Carrotime ( first time of entry, with a composition which was only completed on the morning of the event, Andy had the audience in stitches) Muppett - Ghost Chickens in the sky ( another participative fun and memorable performance from Muppet who has secured a prize each year) Dominic Collins - The sound of silence (a hilarious song from last years overall winner) A big thankyou once again to Martin Smith of Galloway Folk whose enthusiasm for fun and folk music caused him to suggest to the organisers that they include a comic song contest as a regular event at the festival. Our thanks go to all the participants, Colin and Bean at the Hill Inn, Our Sponsors Stuart and Jaquie Carmichael of Masons Dog Oil and Mooncoyn Concert and Ceilidh Band for hosting the event. With a special big thankyou to Chris Bonsall for all his hard work in organising the whole weekend . Kath Wiggans
